A Joint Undertaking by Mistah Foundation and A7 Ministries

March 12-13, 2016 – Bignay II, Sariaya, Quezon

Self Defense Training For Children and Youth

Together in a joint undertaking between Mistah Foundation and A7 Ministries, both foundations actively participated in a community outreach held in Bignay II, Sariaya, Quezon Province. One of its main objective is to educate the youth and children about self-defense training. By teaching Arnis, an early Filipino martial art practiced during the Spanish era, to kids as young as 8 years old, has gathered a number of individuals to be trained to protect themselves from life-threatening situations induced by any person.

The Arnis of the Philippines is a practical, yet fatal form of self-defense. This Filipino fighting style uses a single fighting stick called an arnis and they can choose to wield two sticks at the same time. However, other weapons such as daggers and swords may also be used. The fighter treats the appendages as weapons and are marked as the extension of the arms.

Arnis

Aside from teaching the youth on the origins of the arnis and self-protection, it gives the space and quality time to make new friends and socialize with each other as they teach and help each other learn the skill. Cooperation and developing leadership in the spirit of camaraderie are also the main goals as they train as one solid team.

When in training, the children are also taught to count as to not lose rhythm when it comes to body movement. This will also raise their awareness to the environment and surroundings. It is also important that their reflexes are heightened whenever signals of “attacks” seem to be anticipated. Lastly, the art of Arnis enormously builds one’s confidence and bravery. It was such a pleasant sight to see each one having fun until the last second of an action-packed day.

Boodle Fight

Have you experienced a boodle fight? A boodle fight is a Philippine military eating tradition where food is served on banana leaves spread over the table and eaten with bare hands. This manner of eating was made up by cadets of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) depicting fraternity and equality among members of the PMA by sharing and eating the same food with no regard to rank. Boodle fight is a military term that means “eating combat” and or “attack the food”.
